Rio Colorado 99s

06/15/10

Welcome to the Rio Colorado 99s website!

The Rio Colorado Chapter of the Ninety-Nines aviation club is part of an international group of female aviators rooted in the history of, and with traces back to, Amelia Earhart. We are a chapter of The Ninety-Nines, International Organization of Women Pilots. As a licensed woman pilot (current or not) you are invited to become a part of our legacy as the first and only international organization of women pilots. The Ninety-Nines are a positive force in the aviation community and we invite you to partake in all that we can offer. Please take a few moments to look around and get to know us.

Upcoming Events:

"Day of Sew" June 13th

Sunday June 13th 9am. We are all getting together for a Day of Sew at JonAli Quilt Store, 289 S Lake Havasu Ave. We have 300 bags to embroider for the Ninety Nines International Conference next month, and 300 small bags to assemble to go in the goody bags. Need more info? email Pam at rudolph@citlink.net

Unfortunately, we couldn't gather enough airplanes to have our flyout to Prescott Saturday Jun 12th to visit Dianne Tobin's new place and have our monthly meeting. So....the "Day of Sew" will double as the June meeting. We have more details about being the starting point for the Air Race Classic in 2012, input from the city, the airport manager, grant money that is available for the asking, and a notebook full of ideas and notes from previous races to help us make our decision. Tookie will be presenting the information to us, have your list of questions ready! Also, it's time for elections. The nominations are: Shannon for Chairman, Pam for Vice Chairman, Sherri for Secretary, and Melanie for Treasurer. If you are a card carrying, dues paying member, and can not be at the meeting on the 12th, please email your vote to Sherri by clicking on her name

These are our sewing projects, plus we want to stuff a few of the small items into the bags, to save time once we get to Hawaii:

Congratulations to Roxanne and Melissa-Scholarship Recipients

Ricki Halling soloed May 5, 2010! She soloed in her Piper Cherokee 235-way to go, Ricki. What a way to start the Cinco de Mayo celebration!

Lunch with the Tucson 99s

We had a fun afternoon with Christina and Lindsey from the Tucson chapter! They had come to Lake Havasu to spend Saturday evening at Sara Park Raceway for the adventures of Demolition Derby and the Waterless Boat Races. On Sunday we all met for lunch at Waldo's and had a great time. The wind never let up that day, so being grounded, they moved the party on over to the Dwyer's house. Up and at it early the next morning, Christina and Lindsey were back in Tucson in 1.5hr in the RV-6....little rocket ship! We are looking forward to the next visit, and being together at the Reno Air Races in September.

Rio Colorado Air Derby March 27, 2010

Legendary air racers, along with air race rookies, braced against the March blustery, gusty, winds to complete the 239 mile Rio Colorado Air Derby this Saturday. What a great time we had! The CAP cadets with George Molitor marshalled us out to the run-up after Bill gave us the okay for engine start. Sherri motioned us onto the runway, where Charlie Cassens waved the green flag, here we go! The racers blasted off at 10am from Lake Havasu (HII) with the first high speed, low altitude, fly-by at Needles airport (EED) Race 1 was happy to be in the lead for a short time, before quickly being passed by Race 4's Fran Bera, the winningest woman pilot ever; and our nemesis, Race 2, before we even arrived at the first fly-by....On to private airport Cadiz (CA90) where John broke away from his palm tree oasis and air-conditioned trailer with big screen TV long enough to log the fly bys...From Cadiz to Blythe (BLH) ahhh, a turn to the downwind, out of the turbulence with the wind at our backs, ground speed picking up, wait a minute...airplane passing us? AAggghh, crank it on around Dianne! A quick fly by at Blythe and setting up for our most important fly-by at Quartzsite. We know we have an audience there and we want to please. Dragging our wing through the palm fronds and seeing the whites of their eyes and the smiles on their faces, we know we did a good job. Then its on up Hwy 95 and over the river, to intercept the extended centerline of 32 at Havasu. Lots of activity there, the regular traffic, racers coming in for fly-by, the crowds whooping it up on the sidelines. We taxied in and shut down, then followed our noses to the smell of the hamburgers and brats being cooked up by Gary and Bill. Frances, Roxanne, and Jeannie had quite a spread for racers and supporter, potato salad & macaroni salad, bake beans, cabbage salad, fruit, yogurt, cake-Yum!

After lunch the trophies were presented, and the results follow here. Each team also got a cool medallion, just for participating made by John at Aircraft Spruce. We also got to take home our commemorative chocks:) And probably the coolest trophy of all was the "Tail End Charley" award!
